BOC and Dahlonega City Council Joint Meeting

Last week, the Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners and the Dahlonega City Council held a Joint Meeting to discuss the option of proposing a 1% Road Maintenance and Improvement Tax.  At the meeting, BOC Chairman Chris Dockery said “This is an excellent opportunity for cooperation between the city and the county to allow us to capitalize on tourism dollars for local road improvements.”  Though similar to a SPLOST, a single-county Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) may only be used for transportation-related improvements such as safety, roads, bridges, sidewalks, etc., and all collected revenues must stay within Lumpkin County.  While this was only the first discussion and was primarily intended to be educational, the outcome of the meeting was that the county and city have agreed to move forward by discussing possible projects that must be identified so that the Road Maintenance Improvement Tax question can be included on the March referendum.
