New 2006 Recycling
Center Area

Pre-Program Notes
The
Commissioner's Office has been preparing to begin construction
on the county/city recycling center. The center will be
constructed using a $200,000 grant from the Georgia
Environmental Facilities Authority (GEFA). In preparation to begin the project, county and city
representatives recently traveled to Pennsylvania to examine the
prospective equipment the county will use in the recycling
system.

Coordinator), Merle Jones, Kevin
Flanagan, Mason Bryan,
Steve Gooch (Lumpkin County Commission Chair), and Tom Boushel (President,
V-Quip, inc.)
In searching for recycling
equipment that would service the particular needs of rural
areas, the county became interested in V-Quip. The company
originates from Canada and has many operating systems for rural
areas in the Pennsylvania mountains that boast appreciable rates
of waste diversion.
While in Pennsylvania, county
and city officials were taken to several operating recycling
centers, to both examine different methods and styles of center
construction and to inspect the company's equipment under
everyday use conditions. The effectiveness and durability of the
equipment were noted by Commissioner Gooch. "The V-quip
system was impressive and in designing a comprehensive
system like we are considering - with a potentially regional
center, coupled with rural drop-off sites - it pays to consider
the investment from both a durability and an efficiency
perspective. We want to get the longest use out of products that
work the best for our community's particular
situation."
